Gabon: Top excursions from Libreville

After a few days spent in Libreville -see article Visit of Libreville : My best things to do,  it’s time to get away from the city and to have a look of what options you have in terms of excursions from Libreville !

Libreville is rather well located with excursions’ options near by that would leave you with great memories!

Go on, here are my favorite excursions from Libreville! 🙂

Map of the excursions from Libreville

Nyionié and the Pongara national park

Discovery of the rainforest of Nyonié, and the camps of Béti.

Pongara Lodge

Immediate neighbor of Beti, Pongara Lodge is another option of accommodation in the Pongara National Park.

Pointe Denis and its heavenly beaches

Paradise is less than 15 minutes boat trip away from Libreville!

Cap Esterias

Located at twenty kilometers from Libreville, Cap Esterias is a good spot for a 1/2 day excursion to the beach. The place is peaceful with only a few fishermen surrounded by a dense vegetation. That what gives Cap Esterias a wild atmosphere.

Excursions from Libreville

The bungalows camp of Béti, at Nyonié

If you only had to make one trip from Libreville, it’s MY #1 recommendation! And everyone in Libreville will agree with me. It’s the ideal getaway to spend few days in total connection with nature. If you are lucky enough, you can even see wild animals such elephants, buffaloes, monkeys and other birds. A little effort has to be done to reach the camps of Béti! From Libreville, It will take you 1-hour of pirogue, followed and 45 minutes of 4X4 to reach the National Park of Pongara. But hey, the trip to reach the Béti’s place was enough to make me dream ! To discover in detail my trip at Nyonié, take a look at Nyonié and Pongara park: my favorite place in Gabon

Pongara Lodge

Immediate neighbor of Beti, Pongara Lodge is another option of accommodation in the Pongara National Park. With slightly higher prices, Pongara Lodge remains another alternative of accommodation in the Pongara National Park. Pongara Lodge offers a little bit of luxury with individual bungalows facing the sea, and high-end catering offer. A pretty nice option for a romantic getaway 😉

Pointe Denis and its heavenly beaches

Pointe Denis is THE seaside spot for locals. With its white sandy beaches, and its crystal clear waters, there is no doubt that the Pointe is the perfect spot for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Regarding our experience, we went there on a weekday and we were literally alone!

After less than 15 minutes of crossing by boat, we made a first stop where some lucky ones were dropping their suitcases to their bungalow for a few days in paradise. For the rest of the day, our only beach companions were the hundreds of little white crabs! Do not try to chase after them, they are faster than you … I tried … and failed!

How to get to Pointe Denis: Departure Michèle Marine from 8am to 4pm from Tuesday to Sunday.

If you want to stay more and spend a night or two, the Bay of Turtles can be a good option. They offer overnight in luxurious Bungalows. For snacking at the Pointe, you can stop at Olando N’tchuwa (La Maringa) located directly on the beach.

The beauty of the beaches does not equal the Pointe Denis’ beauty, but brings a real breath of fresh air from the city.

The cherry on the cake is that the road from Libreville has been entirely redone, which makes the driving rather pleasant. To get there, you can book a taxi from Libreville who will wait for you at Cap Esterias, and take you back to Libreville.

Petit Loango

Unfortunately, we did not have time to go to Petit Loango, but the region seams to worth the visit. Located 217 miles southwest from Libreville, this wildlife reserve is a protected wetland in Gabon. To go there, you will need to fly to Gamba, then to go to the village of Setté Cama which is located 3 miles away from Petit Loango.

Even though I haven’t had the chance to try their services, I had spotted the company called Setté Cama Aventure which offers accommodation and ecotourism trips to discover the mangrove. Setté Cama is one of the most famous spots for sport fishing lovers. Over there it seems quite usual to meet elephants on the beach « fishing » with fishermen :)… not too bad, eh?

Obviously, the region of Libreville offers many other options of excursions. To name just a few, Port Gentil is the second largest city in Gabon and is located on Mandji Island, which is 93 miles southwest from Libreville.

Southeast from Libreville, there is also a city called Lambaréné. The city is well-known for the museum of the Albert-Schweitzer Hospital, that tells the story of Dr. Albert-Schweitzer (Nobel Peace Prize 1952) and of his action against leprosy. The visit has been recommended to me, but I haven’t had the chance to go there.

Finally, for nature lovers, you can also visit one of the most important place in Gabon for migratory birds: Akanda National Park. Located at the north of Libreville, it will take you about 35 minutes of pirogue to get there. Pretty nice, no? 🙂
